Exercise - Remember the Purpose As we all know, the population of a
long term care community can be quite diverse. While many of the residents
may have certain health conditions that could limit them from some exercise,
these same residents may excel in other exercise if given the opportunity.
Another thing to think about is that many residents can be quite healthy, but have
decided to move into a long term care community just for some additional
support. Long term care facilities really need to offer progressive exercise
programs with a wide range of choices. Cardiovascular, Strength Training,
Flexibility, Balance, and Coordination are all important for an exercise program to
be effective and successful. Motivation, Progression and Challenge are what
keeps people coming back for more. Residents should be able to enjoy the
satisfaction of reaching goals, and the staff should be there to support them.
