Newsletters "Look Outside the Box"
A successful resident newsletter should include the following:
  • Resident submitted articles.  Let the residents take part in their newsletter.
Ideas  can include, a book or movie review, a brag section to report birth or
wedding announcements, jokes and short stories, ideas and photos.
  • A format that is easy to read using the guidelines that address size, font, color
and content.  Don't use small font and blue print.
  • Consistency with distribution.  It needs to be distributed on the same day every
week or month so residents and their families will not miss out on important
information.   This way everyone knows when to expect and everyone has the
same information at the same time.
  • Have each department offer an article about any changes or suggestions.  Just
keep the article short and sweet.
  • Staff should be sure that the newsletter is read to all residents, if they cannot
    read it on their own.
  • With all the software available focused on creative design of publications, there
is no reason not to have a top notch resident newsletter.
Take a look at the resident newsletter.
What do you think?  Would it catch your
attention at the supermarket?  Would you
label it as a neighborhood newsletter or is
does it present itself as more like
something that had to be distributed to
meet a requirement? If you have a loved
one in the facility, ask if they can submit
an article.  It will catch on.  Do you have
some neat photos?  How about a few
articles where the residents participated
in the content?
Resident newsletters are an important tool to
inform residents and their families about changes
in the facility.  Some common issues with
Newsletters distributed by long term care
facilities is that they are hard to read, distributed
at various times and those residents who cannot
read due to a visual impairment or other limitation
often do not have the opportunity to get the
information that is offered.
