Socialization - Keep it Going
If you have visited a nursing home recently, you will notice very
quickly how many residents will be lined up against the walls or
sitting in the rooms staring into space. Too often the only time
staff will talk to them is when they need something. Many times
the only way they get any socialization is during meal time and
sometimes they don't even get it then. There is plenty of
opportunity for socialization and making friends.
Engage residents. Don't just walk by. Every "Hello" and "Good
To See You" is important. Introduce residents to each other and
to all new staff.
VIP Service
Nursing home staff need to be trained on how to have a conversation
with their residents. Instead of just handing over the dinner, try
imagining your working in the VIP section of a hotel. When you bring
someone their dinner, ask the resident how they are doing, review the
menu with them. It doesn't matter if it is the same menu as yesterday,
just do it anyway. Take your time. Residents deserve VIP service.
